Roosevelt (1882–1945) and British prime minister Winston Churchil (1874–1965) on the back seat of the presidential limousine, Sunshine Special. Washington, ca. 1943. Churchill was appointed British prime minister on May 10, 1940 and had from the very beginning two paramount goals. One was to brace the British public, practically as well as morally, for the hurricane that was to follw: The Blitz against London and the Battle of Britain. His second goal was to drag America into the war as fast as possible. This wish was fulfilled on December 8, 1941 when Roosevelt declared war on Japan as a result of the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor the previous day. Thus a new phase of the relationship between Churchill and Roosevelt was inaugurated, a relationship that since then has been called 'the friendship which saved the world.
