P. S. Krøyer (b. Stavanger 1851, d. Skagen 1909)

“Diset blåt hav. Vesuv i baggrunden”. Misty blue sea. Mount Vesuvius in the background. Signed and dated S. K. 22 Juli 96. Oil on canvas. 33×63 cm.

H. Chr. Christensen, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of P. S. Krøyer no. 587.

In the summer of 1896 Krøyer was staying on Capri from 10 June until sometime after 29 August.

Provenance: Supreme Court Attorney C. L. David (1923).

C. L. David (1878–1960) was the founder of The David Collection in Kronprinsessegade in Copenhagen. The David Collection holds a large and internationally recognized collection of Islamic art, but also a fine collection of Danish art from 1880 to 1950. In particular, the works of Vilhelm Hammershøi are to be emphasized here. Knowing the love of C. L. David for the works of Vilhelm Hammershøi, it is understandable why he has acquired this painting by Krøyer, which is, in spite of being a landscape painting, in many ways affiliated to the atmospheric, grayscale interiors of Hammershøi.
