The Swedish painter Gustaf Wilhelm Palm trained at The Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, where he specialized in landscape painting. In 1840, he traveled to Italy, first stopping in Venice. The following year, he settled in Rome in 1841, where he remained for the next 11 years until he returned to Stockholm in 1852. Due to his prolonged stay in Italy, he became a central figure among the Swedish artists in Rome. He was also adept at forging relationships across the Scandinavian countries; Palm established connections with several Danish painters, including Thorald Læssøe (1816–1878), Anders Christian Lunde (1809–1886), and Lorenz Frølich (1820–1908), the last-mentioned of whom has depicted Palm in the present portrait.
