Paul Fischer (b. Copenhagen 1860, d. Gentofte 1934)

Street scene from Vognmagergade in Copenhagen. Signed and dated Paul Fischer 1916. Oil on canvas. 54×40 cm.

The large grey building on the right side of the street was built in 1914 and was previously known as Gutenberghus. It now houses the Danish Film Institute and the Cinemateket. All the old buildings on the left side of the street were demolished during the 1920s and 30s and replaced by the new Gutenberghus (now Egmont) and the two buildings were connected via Gutenberghus' footbridge with the characteristic large clock in the middle floating over Vognmagergade.
