Small Tibetan Gau of gilt bronze, removable door with Buddhist symbol and ornamentation, interior seated Sakyamuni Buddha in gilded bronze. 18th century. H. 5 cm. Figure 4 cm weight 46 gr.

Provenance: Sofus Marius Black 1882–1960, telegraph manager and art collector.

A Gau (also spelled Ghau or Gao) is a Tibetan Buddhist amulet container or prayer box. As a small container used to hold and carry powerful amuletic objects.

Condition

Wear due to age and use as seen on the photos of the website. The unevenness of the gau e.g. that the lid is gapping al little bit on the right side, indicates the level of workmanship. Internally with a cloth, presumably containing religious text (it has not been removed so as not to damage it).
