Frederick II of Denmark

Handwritten letter, orig. signed by King Frederik II (Fredericus Rex), May 27, 1586. Written in Latin. One page. Folio. Folded, with recipient and royal seal stamped in red wax on verso (seal worn). The letter is addressed to soldier and diplomat Peregrine Bertie, Lord Willoughby de Eresby. Good condition. Danish translation enclosed. Housed in elegant box.

The letter, which is a recommendation, mentions an incident that occurred due to Peregrine Bertie’s (1555–1601) second visit to Denmark in 1585, where he tried to get Frederik II to support the British attempt to drive out the Spanish from the Netherlands. Frederik sent 2000 horses. In gratitude of the support, Peregrine must have sent G. Va. to Denmark with hunting dogs as a gift and to say thank you. Peregrine’s first visit to Denmark in 1582 was focused on securing free and safe passage for British ships through The Sound.

Provenance: Book collector Bent Juel-Jensen, later Flemming Erik Pedersen (1931–2020).
