Conrad Freyberg (b. Stettin 1842, d. Berlin 1915)

A troop review led by Prince Albert of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1863–1948), who is seen riding a horse in the front center. Signed and dated Conrad Freyberg 1909. Oil on canvas. 48×64 cm.

Prince Albert of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksborg (1863–1948) was son of Duke Friedrich and Duchess Adelheid of Glücksburg. The Prince was appointed in 1893 as a riding master and squadron commander in the Prussian Guard du Corps in Potsdam and in 1909 Commander of the 21st Cavalry Brigade in Frankfurt a.M. It is a possibility that the present picture was painted in connection with this appointment. Besides his guard du corps duties, he had relations with the Imperial German Court in Berlin. Prince Albert was thus the younger brother of Duke Friedrich Ferdinand of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, who was married to Princess Caroline-Mathilde of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg. She was the sister of Princess Auguste Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg, who was married to Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany. Prince Albert became grandfather of the below mentioned sisters.

Provenance: ”The Historical Collection of Four Princesses From the Cavalier House of Glücksburg Castle”. The cultural heritage after the sisters, Her Highness Princess Elisabeth of Ysenburg and Büdingen, née Princess of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1945–2024), Her Highness Princess Irene of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (b. 1946), Her Highness Princess Margaretha of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (b. 1948), and Her Highness Princess Sibylla Ursula of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (b. 1955).
