Print in colors. Published in Danish by Rud. Bechtold & Comp., Wiesbaden. Visible size 56×69 cm.

King Christian IX of Denmark (1818–1906) was born at Gottorp Castle as Prince of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck. His parents were Duke Wilhelm and Duchess Louise of Beck, who in 1825 were appointed Duke and Duchess of Glücksborg by their brother-in-law, King Frederik VI of Denmark. This also meant that Prince Christian's title now became Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. After his father's death in 1831, Prince Christian was educated in Copenhagen and closely associated with his uncle and aunt, King Frederik VI and Queen Marie of Denmark. In 1852, Prince Christian was appointed heir to the Danish throne and in 1863 he was proclaimed King of Denmark.

King Christian IX was the brother of, among others, Duke Carl of Glücksburg, Duke Frederik of Glücksburg, Duchess Friederike of Anhalt-Bernburg and Prince Hans of Glücksburg.
