Niels Skovgaard (b. Copenhagen 1858, d. Lyngby 1938)

Portrait of Richard Steenberg playing the oboe. Signed with monogram and inscribed “Richard Steenberg (tegnet vinteren 76–77?) samtidig malt ham, hvilket han ejer” (Richard Steenberg (drawn in Winter 76–77?), and at the same time I produced a painting of him, which he owns). Pencil on paper laid on paper. Sheet size 28.5×21 cm. Unframed.

Richard Steenberg was one of Niels Skovgaard's close friends. His parents lived in England and he himself eventually settled in Edinburgh. Here, Niels visited him in the summer of 1881, where they went on a trip to the Scottish Highlands together. Niels describes this trip in a letter to his sister, which is reproduced in parts on p. 77–78 in Aksel Rode's book “Niels Skovgaard”. The painting, which NIels Skovgaard refers to on the drawing, is mentioned as no. 38 in this Catalogue Raisonné, and listed as belonging to R. Steenberg, Newcastle. Moreover, Steenberg is mentioned on pp. 60, 72–73 and 77–78.

Provenance: The artist, thence by descent through the family.
