Neil Armstrong (b. USA 1930, d. 2012)

An unusually large signed colour photograph of the American Apollo 11 astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin standing on the Moon on July 21, 1969. In Aldrin's visor the creator of the image can be seen, Neil Armstrong (1930–2012), the leader of the expedition, as well as the lunar landing module. Photo size 70 × 55 cm. Frame size 75 × 60 cm.

The American Apollo program was initiated in 1961, when President Kennedy stated that the US before the end of the decade would reach the Moon with a manned mission. This was a reaction towards the head start, which the Soviet Union had obtained when launching Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957. Sputnik 1 was the first satellite ever to be put in orbit around the Earth. In the late summer of 1969 NASA hit back. On July 21 Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk on the Moon. He did so with the words “That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind”. A few minutes later Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin followed.

Only a very few photographs of Aldrin in this size are known.
