“Hestgarden indskibes i Korsør Havn for at begive sig til krigsskuepladsen 1848”. The Royal Lifeguard is embarked in Korsør 1848 to take off for the battlefield. Study. C. 1888. Signed Otto Bache. Oil on canvas. 33×50 cm.

Exhibited: Foreningen for National Kunst, “Otto Bache 1839–1927”, 1964 no. 90.

The present painting is a study for a large painting owned by the Royal family deposited at Sønderborg Castle. It was painted on the occasion of King Christian IX's 25th Government Anniversary in 1888. It shows the young prince - later crown prince - Christian of Glücksborg, who, as an officer in the Royal Horseguard, was embarked in 1848 to join the battle in Schleswig. The prince is in full uniform with his hand on his hip a little to the right of the centre of the painting next to a saddled horse.
