Martinus Rørbye (b. Drammen 1803, d. Copenhagen 1848)

“Ponte del Caravane, Smyrna.” Turks sitting at the Caravan Bridge, where camels are crossing, Smyrna. 1838. Signed Rörbye Ponte del Caravane, Smyrna. Watercolour on paper. Sheet size 29.5×40.5 cm.

Study for “Scene af det offentlige liv i Orienten” (Scene of public life in the Orient) from 1838. The motif is taken at the Caravan Bridge near Smyrna. That one exhibited Charlottenborg 1839 no. 43 - it was the painter's member piece at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.

Smyrna is an ancient Greek town, which today is part of Turkey (Izmir).
