Eleonore Christine Harboe (after Karel Du Jardin) (b. Copenhagen 1796, d. Rome 1860)

The present work is painted after Karel Du Jardin's painting from 1663, which is located at The National Gallery of Denmark (Inv. No. KMSsp561).
Eleonore Christine Harboe received no formal training, but developed her artistic skills by self-studies. In her work, she was copying particularly the Dutch and Italian old masters. In 1856, she moved to Rome and studied and worked on her art here until her death in 1860. Harboe is represented with a single painting at The National Gallery of Denmark, “Martha and Magdalene”, a copy after Pompeo Batoni, from 1829 (Inv. No. KMS785). She was represented in the exhibition “Kvindelige kunstneres retrospektive udstilling” (The Women Artists’ Retrospective Exhibition) at Den Frie Udstilling (The Free Exhibition) in 1920 with the same painting.
Marks from the stretcher slightly visible on the front. Crackles. Small peelings, primarily along the lower edge. Areas with porous paint layer. A small hole at the upper edge. Retouches. Needs a cleaning and a tightening.
