François-Marie Arouet, 1694–1778, best known by his pseudonym Voltaire, was a French philosopher, author, playwright and social critic. Voltaire was one of the Enlightenment's great philosophers and a great champion of free speech and human rights.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 1712–1778, was a Swiss-French philosopher, writer and composer who has had a decisive influence on modern Western civilization.
