Claudius Du Chesne (, floruit in London)

A George I longcase clock in walnut case, the square gilt brass dial with openwork corner ornaments and floral engravings, silvered chapter ring with black Roman numerals, subdials showing minutes, calendar and strike-silent. The dial signed Claudius Du Chesne, Londini. England, early-18th century. H. 245 cm. B. 51 cm. D. 28 cm.

The clockmaker Claudius Du Chesne came to London from Paris around 1690 and was free of the Clockmakers' Company from 1693 to 1730; he was a well-respected maker who produced several complicated astronomical and musical clocks. Some of his pieces are today part of important collections such as the Grünes Gewölbe in Dresden, Germany, and at Rosenborg Castle, Copenhagen.

Condition

Pendulum, a pair of weights, windingkey and key for the front door is enclosed. No guarantee of the function of the clock work. Wear due to age and use.

The case is partly original, but was later restored and an extra top was added as well as a carving around the dial, and the door has an oval glass pane with a cutting around it.
