2449/210

An original b/w silver gelatin press photograph of American actress Marilyn Monroe (1926–1962) during a bike ride in London on July 16, 1956. Back with agency stamps, receipt stamp ('Rec'd JL'), handwritten note in green as well as stamped publication dates (July 17, 1956, March 6, 1960, August 9, 1962). Oak wood frame and double glazing. Visible size 24×19 cm. Frame size 33×28 cm.

'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes', the title of one of Marilyn Monroe's breakthrough films (1953), could also be applied to this photograph from the summer of 1956, when the American star spent four months in England filming 'The Prince and the Showgirl' with herself in the female lead and Sir Laurence Olivier occupying the main male character. Shortly beforehand, Marilyn Monroe had casually mentioned to the English - mostly male - press corps that she had a dream of one day cycling around idyllic Surrey. This remark was not forgotten and on July 16, the day the photograph was taken, the tabloid newspaper 'The Sketch' gave her a bike of the finest British quality!
