2543/185

Original black-and-white sepia-toned press or promotional photograph of American jazz singer Billie Holiday (1915–1959). Recording from c. 1947. Back with agency stamp, restriction stamp, editing instructions in red, handwritten notes, and stamped dates for newspaper publication (July 17, 1959; obituary, August 21, 1964). Red-painted wooden frame with double glass. Visible size 20×15 cm. Frame size 36×31 cm.

Billie Holiday died on July 17, 1959, at the Metropolitan Hospital Center in Harlem, New York City, and it is likely that this photograph, dated July 17 of that year, was used in a subsequent obituary. Sepia toning is a photographic process whose purpose is to produce a warm, slightly brownish colour. The method was particularly widespread from the 1920s to the 1950s.
