Joakim Skovgaard (b. Copenhagen 1856, d. s.p. 1933)

Purchased by the Skovgaard Museet in September 2015.

“Koner og Piger byger Tøj ved en Aa i Halland”. Women and girls washing clothes by a river in Halland. 1881. Signed Joakim Skovgaard. Oil on canvas. 77×117 cm.

Exhibition label on the stretcher.

Provenance: Consul General Johan Hansen's collection no. 1595 (not his auctions).

To “Byge Tøj” is an old expression for washing clothes.

Correction: In the Consul General Johan Hansen's collection the title is mistakenly listed as “Koner og Piger byger Tøj ved en Aa i Holland”. Skovgaard stayed during the summers from 1879 to 1900 in Halland and the motif is from here and not from Holland. This has therefore been corrected (31 August 2015).
