“Maleren Fritz Petzholdt paa Jagt i den romerske Campagne” (The painter Fritz Petzholdt on a hunt in The Roman Campagna). Signed E. Meyer. On the back of the back lining dated Rom 1836. Pencil on paper. Sheet size 24×13 cm.
Description and description of the date revised 2024–12-6.
Provenance: The artist probably gave the drawing to Petzholdt and upon his death by descent to Gottlieb Collin (1806–85), who was married to Petzholdt's sister, Augusta (1801–65). Thence by descent to his son Edgar Collin (1836–1906) and thereafter to his son, Kaj Jonas Collin (1867–1938). Bruun Rasmussen auction 617, 1995 no. 723–2.
At the age of 16, in 1821, Fritz Petzholdt (1805–1833) was admitted to the The Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1821. The year after, in 1822, he was apprenticed to the painter J. M. Baruël (1809–1862). Petzholdt was determined to train as a landscape painter, but he still had to complete the compulsory training in life class before he could specialise in landscape painting, including private lessons with C. W. Eckersberg (1783–1853).
In the spring of 1830, Petzholdt travelled to Italy with his friend and fellow painter Albert Küchler (1803–1886), and in October he arrived in Rome. He spent six months getting to know Rome, but when spring arrived, he - along with other Danish painters in Rome - began to explore the city's surroundings and the mountains. Through his sketchbooks, you can follow him along the Appian Way and further into the Campagna, where this drawing depicting Petzholdt hunting, drawn by Ernst Meyer, is from. Meyer, who lived in Italy for most of his life, captured Petzholdt in 1836, during his last year in Italy. Petzholdt died shortly afterwards, in 1838, aged just 33, and the majority of his artistic production, which is not very large, is from his time in Italy.
The paper has turned slightly yellow. Minimal tear by signature. Discolouration in the lower left corner. Discolouration from earlier mount along the lower edge.
