Jens Juel (b. Balslev, Funen 1745, d. Copenhagen 1802)

Purchased by the museum at Sønderborg slot in 2014.

Princess Louise Augusta in a Turkish dress. Full length en face. In a yellow dress, blue velvet coat lined with ermine. She is seated at a table with a Smyrna carpet and a bouquet of flowers, in her hand a mask. In the background a drapery and a column. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 44×34 cm.

Ellen Poulsen, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Jens Juel under no. 383, mentions several replicas by Juel's hand of this charming portrait. It is not possible to exactly identify which one it is.

In the late 18th century it was high fashion to dress up in a Turkish or oriental costume and have one's portrait painted. The name of the dress is “Circasienne” and a famouis Danish actress madame Preisler was dressed in a similar one playing Roxelane in the play “Soliman the Second”.

Another portrait of “Princess Louise Augusta in a Turkish dress” by Jens Juel was sold at auction 846, 2013, lot 12 for 165.000 DKK. Now in the Art Collection of Ambassador John L. Loeb Jr. New York, former ambassador to Denmark.

Provenance: Since the 1850ies the painting has been in a private collection at a Danish manor house on Sjælland, Denmark.
