Hans J. Wegner (b. Tønder 1914, d. Gentofte 2007)

“New Papa Bear”. Wing back easy chair with wide teak armrests and round, tapering legs. Sides, back and loose seat cushion upholstered with green wool. Model AP 69. This example manufactured approx. 1970s by AP Stolen. Retailed by Johannes Hansen with metal tag.

Provenance: Private Danish collection.

“The original ”Papa Bear“ chair was very expensive to produce due to its traditional construction with springs. A side effect of the youth revolt and the new ”use and throwaway“ consumer behaviour was that consumers came to expect cheaper furniture. That is why Wegner designed the ”New Papa Bear“ with foam instead of springs to keep the costs down in 1968. The chair became very popular in the US in the 1970s. The large proportions and design of the chair also resemble the American car designs of the time.”
