Asta Nielsen (b. Copenhagen 1881, d. Frederiksberg 1972)
Still life with jug, flowers and rooster. Signed Asta Nielsen. Collage of textiles originating from the costumes of the actress herself. Visible size 52×40 cm.
The iconic actress Asta Nielsen is still today considered one of silent film's biggest stars. She was a skilled interpreter of particularly tragic female destinies, unhappy and unrequited love; a tragedy of melodrama. Her personal life is surrounded by both mystery and passion: Born in difficult circumstances, feted film star and femme fatale - a strong and unorthodox woman who went her own way in all aspects of life.
Asta Nielsen's career unfolded particularly in Germany in the early days of the film industry, but in 1937 she moved home to Denmark. Partly due to the rise of Nazism, partly due to the tone film, which does not seem to suit her temperament. After this, she only appeared in very few performances, and instead she wrote short stories and made fabric collages, often made of materials from her old film costumes.
Here at the auction, with this still life, is thus an opportunity to buy into the story of the first great diva in cinematic history.
