Joakim Skovgaard (b. Copenhagen 1856, d. s.p. 1933)

View from the Acropolis towards the Erechtheion and the Hall of Caryatids with the six kores (girls) carrying the hall's roof. Signed with monogram and dated 1896. Oil on panel. 33×41 cm.

Erechtheion was built between 420 and 415 BC and is named after the legendary King Erechteus.

Ribe Kunstmuseum owns a painting from the same locality entitled “Udsigt fra Karyathidehallen på Erechteion”, (View from the Hall of Caryatids on the Erechtheion), dated 1884 (Inv. No. RKMm194). Here, Joakim Skovgaard has made his way into the hall to paint two caryatids up close.

Joakim Skovgaard made two trips to Greece in 1884 and 1896 respectively.
