Vilhelm Rosenstand (b. Copenhagen 1838, d. s.p. 1915)

Collection of 14 studies, collected in four frames. Partly signed monogram with date. Pencil and ink on paper. Frame size 42×32 cm. (4)

Vilhelm Rosenstand was a technically gifted and versatile artist who worked within the framework of international realism. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1856 to 1863 under Wilhelm Marstrand and later continued his training with the French painter Léon Bonnat in Paris from 1881 to 1882. Rosenstand's artistic practice was marked by a vivid interest in contemporary everyday life, which he depicted with great empathy and attention to detail. His long stay in Italy from 1869 to 1881 provided inspiration for a number of atmospheric scenes, but he also captured life in both Paris and Copenhagen in his works.

The present collection of 14 studies dates from the early 1850s and thus represents some of the earliest known works by Vilhelm Rosenstand. These drawings offer a fascinating glimpse into the artist’s formative years and already demonstrate remarkable technical skill and powers of observation—produced at a time before he had entered the Academy or received formal training in drawing.

The collection documents Rosenstand’s early artistic development and his exploration of subject matter, composition, and figure drawing. As such, it serves as an intriguing window into the making of an artist and is highly relevant for understanding the full scope of Rosenstand’s oeuvre.
