19-year-old GDR border guard Conrad Schumann became instantly world-famous when he jumped over the sector border of divided Berlin at the corner of Ruppinerstrasse and Bernauerstrasse on August 15, 1961. Seconds later, he was in West Berlin. At the time, the Berlin Wall was under construction, but where Schumann was patrolling, there were still only barbed wire rolls, no wall. The young soldier seized this opportunity. Photographer Peter Leibing's (1941–2008) spontaneous recordings of the escape are among the most famous snapshots from the Cold War era.
This is an original b/w silver gelatin press photograph from the 1960s. Creased corner. Attached keyword sheet with some discolouration. Furthermore normal signs of handling.
