Thorald Læssøe (b. Frederikshavn 1816, d. Copenhagen 1878)

“Ved Arresø”. At Arresø in North Zealand. 1838. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 44×59 cm.

Exhibited: Kunstforeningen, 'De Ukendte Guldaldermalere', 1982 no. 90.

The catalogue states the following about the painting (in Danish): “In his early work as a landscape painter, Læssøe devoted himself to the Danish nature. In 1838 he sought motifs at Arresø, where his friend J. Th. Lundbye had already been the year before. This depiction of the open landscape shortly after sunset may very well have been painted directly in front of the subject.” (p. 61).

Provenance: Bruun Rasmussen auction 406, 1980 no. 131. Kunsthallen June 2003, no. 333, reproduced.
