Elliott Daingerfield (b. Harpers Ferry 1859, d. New York 1932)

“Trees on The Canyon Rim”. Signed E. Daingerfield. Oil on canvas. 77×92 cm.

On the stretcher an exhibition label from Canadian National Toronto Exhibition 1914.

Elliott Daingerfield was an American landscape painter living and working in North Carolina. The style of his landscapes touches upon the romantic sublime through which he tries to express a strong belief in the connection between nature and spirituality – a form of 'visionary style'. He was inspired by, among others, European symbolism but also the Barbizon school and the Hudson River school through the American landscape painter George Inness. This landscape is a typical example of his 'sublime romantic' style.
