Carl Locher (b. Flensburg 1851, d. Skagen 1915)

“Skagen Sønderstrand ud imod Grenen” (Skagen Sønderstrand near the top). Signed and dated Carl Locher, Skagen 02. Oil on canvas. 29×47.5 cm.

Carl Locher went, like Krøyer later did, to Paris, to join Léon Bonnat's school of painting. He copied at the Louvre; but also went out to the coast at Le Havre and the small fishing villages on the Normandy coast to paint the sea. The impressions from Normandy and from Bonnat influenced the motifs and colour scheme in his paintings including those he painted in Skagen.

Carl Locher, who traveled around the world, never forgot Skagen with the wide beach and the sea, especially the rough sea which is imitated in the present painting.
