Frits Schlegel (b. Frederiksberg 1896, d. Ordrup 1965)

Rare, high back easy chair with Brazilian rosewood frame, “shoes” of ebony. Sides, seat and back upholstered with patinated brown leather. This example made approx. 1947–49 by cabinetmaker Peter Petersen.

Provenance: Made for the resistance fighter known as “The Tomato”, Director Erik Nyegaard, who was part of the group that included “The Flame” and “The Citron”. “The Tomato" provided a safe haven for The Flame, and The Flame was staying in The Tomato’s villa when the Germans in 1944 got wind of the infamous resistance fighter’s whereabouts and came to apprehend him. However, The Flame committed suicide before the Germans were able to arrest him. As punishment, The Tomato was arrested and immediately sent to the Frøslev prison camp, while his wife and two children were given 20 minutes to pack their most cherished possessions and disappear. The villa was then blown to bits and pieces. After the war, Erik Nyegaard asked the architect Frits Schlegel to design a new villa that was erected on the site where the original villa had stood. This chair comes from the interior of the new villa.
