Portrait of painter and curator P. H. Rasmussen (1818–1889) with dark hair and brown beard. Buttoned black coat, soft collar, black tie. Unsigned. Oil on canvas laid on canvas. 22.5×18.5 cm.

Sigurd Schultz, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of C. A. Jensen no. 395.

Literature: Sigurd Schultz, “C. A. Jensen”, 1932 mentioned 408–409, reproduced p. 411. Sigurd Schultz describes the present painting as one of the finest smaller paintings C.A. Jensen has made. Among other things, he writes that “Jensen has immortalized P. Herman Rasmussen's features and bright disposition. His eyes are cold blue and crystal clear, but the prominent drawing of the eyelids makes them smile, and he has a funny way of raising his left eyebrow a bit. The skin colour is unusual and cool, with reddish and golden ochre tones, painted with a displaced brush, so that the form is given life and juiciness, and in the beard are wonderful notes of straw yellow. Jensen's completely impressionistic treatment of the light is unique. It falls in light sunspots, directly placed with small rapid strokes on the skin colour”.

Provenance: Organist R.C. Rasmussen's collection, his auction 1904 no. 48 Managing clerk Emil Bang's collection, his auction Winkel & Magnussen 161, 1934 no. 166, reproduced p. 27.
