Henry Heerup (b. Copenhagen 1907, d. s.p. 1993)

Untitled, 1950s. Signed Heerup. Oil on wood. 41.5×87 cm.

Original receipt from 1954 signed and dated by Heerup is included.

In the early 1950s, Heerup demonstrates that he can move freely between a figurative subject matter and a more abstract visual content. What ties it all together is his focus on sweeping, organic forms and his play with ornamentation, which manifests in numerous imaginative variations. His flair for using simple materials and incorporating their natural qualities is also evident in this work, where he leaves parts of the background unpainted so that the natural tone and material properties can come to the fore. The offered work is accompanied by the unpretentious original receipt, which in itself is a charming example of the artist’s characteristic handwriting and informal, playful approach to the essence of art and the encounter with the people it engages.

This lot is subject to Artist's Royalty.
Condition

The work is mounted in the wooden frame with nails along the edges on the front; here, two nails are missing along the upper edge. Natural drying cracks in the wood.
