Jais Nielsen (b. Copenhagen 1885, d. Hellerup 1961)
Saint George and the Dragon. C. 1915. Unsigned. Oil on paper. Sheet size 31.5×25 cm.
This sketch is an example of Jais Nielsen's characteristic triangular composition, which he especially worked with from 1915 to 1917, and used for his famous circus motifs. In this case, the lines of the construction are visible and expose his principles of establishing an image. In addition, the study must be one of his earliest depictions of the legend of Saint George and the dragon, a motif which he painted several times between 1916 and 1921 in larger versions with clear inspiration from French Cubism.
