Under a law passed in 1885, the newly founded National Treasury of Iceland (Landssjóður) was permitted to issue notes in its own name, which subsequently became the initial capital of Landsbanki Íslands (the National Bank of Iceland). The first Icelandic paper money were issued in 1886.
