Charles Bance and Russian painter, 18th-19th century

Charles Bance, 18th-19th century, excudit: “Cavallerie Imperiale Russe. Tartares, Noble Tscherkesse, Bashkirs, Cosaque, Calmuck Officier Cosaque, Hussards”. Members of different Russian regiments on horseback. Inscribed in print Ch.les Bance. 1813–1814. Handcoloured aquatint. Visible size 26×39 cm.

Russian painter, first half of the 19th century: Military parade in front of Prince Saltykov's Palace in St. Petersburg. At the column was later built the monument of General Alexander Suvorov, in the background to the left is the Marble Palace. Unsigned. Pen and watercolour on paper mounted on cardboard. Sheet size 28×49 cm. (2).

Erica Zeiner-Henriksen has written on the reverse of the military parade motif (in Norwegian): “Millionaja Street no. 3, where we lived from 1923–1928 and where little brother [Richard ”Dick“ Zeiner-Henriksen] was born August 1 1924. This watercolour shows the house around 1780 - presumably from the era of Catherine the Great. The garden was later ”Soworoff's Square“, and the palace was enlarged with a third floor. We lived on the second floor. The house was built and owned by Prince Saltykov. After the revolution it became an institute for the communists in 1928.”

Provenance: Acquired by Richard and Erica Zeiner-Henriksen 1922–1927 in St. Petersburg.
