Elisabeth Von Eicken (b. Mülheim 1862, d. Potsdam 1940)
Rocky coastal scene. Signed E. v. Eicken. Oil on canvas laid on cardboard. 12.5×22 cm.
CHECK!!!Elisabeth von Eicken was a German painter of landscapes. To honour her artistic ambitions, she went to Paris to educate herself under the guidance of the French painter of landscapes, Edmond Yon (1841–1897). At the time French landscape painting was greatly influenced by the Barbizon School, a group of French painters named after the village Barbizon, a town where von Eicken also resided. The group urged a move from formalised romaticism towards realism, letting the landscape become a motif in its own right, instead of a backdrop for dramatic scenes. After 10 years in Paris and Barbizon lisabeth von Eicken established her career in her homeland, Germany. In the present painting we do indeed see the landscape as the primary motif. The small format might also be an indication of the painting being painted en plein air.
