Carl Bloch (b. Copenhagen 1834, d. s.p. 1890)
Street scene Rome. A young girl at her neddlework. Signed C. Bloch gentaget (repeated) and dated 1865. Oil on canvas. 62×46 cm.
This painting is a repetition of a painting dated 1861. That one Rikard Magnussen, A Catalogue Raisonné no. 84, listed under the year 1862.
Exhibited: Kunstforeningen, “Arbejder af Carl Bloch”, 1903 no. 54.
Literature: Rikard Magnussen, “Carl Bloch”, 1931, reproduced p. 37. Bloch was attracted to the Roman street life and his unique abilities as a genre painter are indisputable, as well as his witty powers of observation and his good sense of humour. As in this painting, where the young girl sewing is openly flirting with the painter (and us), while the woman with the distaff is looking severely at the painter (and the viewer).
