Johannes Larsen (b. Kerteminde 1867, d. s.p. 1961)

The Danish flag Dannebrog is blowing in the wind over the red rooftops in Kerteminde. Signed with monogram and dated 1911. Watercolour on paper. Visible size 37×39 cm.

View of the characteristic red roofs in the Danish town of Kerteminde and further out across the sea from the gable room on the 2nd floor of his parents' merchant’s house, where Johannes Larsen had a room and studio for many years. This view was, with variations in perspective and details, a recurring motif for the artist, culminating with the iconic painting “”Sommer, solskin og blæst" (Summer, Sunshine and Wind) (Ordrupgaard) from 1899, which this watercolour is a variation of.
