A rare relief cast of “Oxen driven for offering”, after J. A. Jerichau (1816–1883). Large plaster cast with three men and two oxen, from Jerichaus frieze “The wedding of Alexander with Roxanne”. L. 148 cm. H. 80 cm. D. 5 cm.
The frieze was made for Christiansborg on commision from Caroline Amalie (1796–1881) and was finished in 1864. It was however never mounted and was in storage until it was lost during a fire in 1884. It was later reconstructed by Harald Conradsen.
Possibly acquired from the Glyptoteket, where part of the frieze was sold in the 1960s.
Wear due to use and age. Wooden frame visible on back and integrated in the cast. Lines on front likely from the casting moulds. Minimal chips, some irregularity appear original from the frieze.
