During World War II, the Germans fired approximately 10,000 V-1 rockets at British targets, including approximately 2,000 at London. The rockets, the world's first cruise missiles, emitted a characteristic buzzing sound before impact, spreading terror among the population. The name, V-1, is an abbreviation of ‘Vergeltung’, the German word for revenge.
This is an original black-and-white silver gelatin press photograph from 1944, which shows normal signs of age and handling. Telegram on back has yellowed severely.
