Laurits Tuxen (b. Copenhagen 1853, d. s.p. 1927)

A young woman sunbathing on Skagen Sønderstrand. Signed and dated L. T. 09. Oil on canvas. 42×98 cm.

Exhibited: Skagens Museum,“Skagen Guld/Værker i privateje”, 2011, p. 160, reproduced p. 20 and p. 76.

Tuxen and his family settled more or less in Skagen 1901. The town had become a popular seaside resort after the railroad connection between Frederikshavn and Skagen was established in 1890. The place was known for its fresh air and may sunny days. Here it was possible to find wellness and health for soul and body. You could take a swim in the sea or lie in the sun.

New motifs appeared with naked sunbathing women on the beach. They found their way to Tuxen's canvasses, as in this painting, where a young woman is sunbathing.
