The Ra Expeditions were two expeditions undertaken in 1969–70 by Norwegian explorer, archaeologist and author Thor Heyerdahl (1914–2002). The expeditions aimed to show that Egyptian/Phoenician boats made of papyrus could have reached America in ancient times. The first expedition failed when the boat, Ra (named after the Egyptian sun god of the same name), fell apart after eight weeks at sea. At this point it had traveled 5,000 km. The second expedition, Ra II, reached Barbados in 1970 - after 57 days at sea. Thor Heyerdahl had thus proved his theory.
