Six Russian silver salt cellars of which a pair of rectangular form raised on four low feet, remains of gilt. Indistinct maker's mark, assayer Andrej Antonovich Kovalski 1854, Moscow town mark, 84 standard. Further, four other silver salt cellars, all with indistinct marks, one unmarked. Weight 292 g. L. 8–11 cm. (6).

Provenance: The Danish Envoy and Consul General Hans Poul Hoffmeyer (1893–1962). Secretary of Legation in Vienna, Berlin, Moscow and Warzaw in the 1920s, later Counsellor of the Legation in Berlin, Paris, Turkey, Israel and Greece, and finally Consul General in Hamburg from 1954. Hoffmeyer's interest in collecting silver was pervasive and he acquired items in all the cities he lived. Thence by descent with residence in Denmark, until today.

Condition

Wear due to age and use. Oval salt cellar: Base with missing rim band and perforation. Pair of salt cellars: One cellar top rim with missing part of decoration.
