Wilhelm Marstrand (b. Copenhagen 1810, d. s.p. 1873)
Portrait study of the artist’s wife Margrethe (1824–1867) and one of their sons. Unsigned. Inscribed on the reverse: W. Marstrand. Oil on canvas. 31.5 × 20 cm.
Wilhelm Marstrand married late compared to his artist friends. It weighed heavily on him; he often spoke with his close friend, the pastor Johannes Fibiger, about the problem. He painted courtship and family scenes and complained about how hard it was to live alone. In 1850, when he had turned 40, he met Margrethe Christine Weidemann, 14 years his junior, who restored his joy in painting. See Gitte Valentiner, “Wilhelm Marstrand, Scenebilleder”, 1992, pp. 86–92 for comparable family portraits.
