Johann Salomon Wahl (b. Chemnitz 1689, d. Copenhagen 1765)

Portrait of Frederik IV (1671–1730) wearing armor and carrying the Order of the Elephant. Under the royal crown at the bottom to the left an inscription: “Frederick. King of Denmark. Anno 1729”. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 140×110 cm. English period carved and gilded frame.

Provenance: The Second Marquis of Breadalbane to Tymouth Castle, his art collection. Label on the back with the following information: “Brought to Taymouth Castle, From the Marquis of Breadalbane's Apartments at Holyrood Castle May 16, 1860”. That might be the reason that the text on the painting is in English. The painting was intended for an English collection.
