Mikhail & Semen Gratchev (, St. Petersburg 1908-1917)

A large and unusual Russian silver-gilt and cloisonné enamel cockerel kovsh, of traditional form, the prow cast and chased with a stylized rooster head with detailed cox comb and feathers, the rim and body decorated with stylized, scrolling flowers and foliage in blue, turquoise, green, red and white against a stippled ground, the flat and shaped handle with conforming decoration and a quatrefoil cartouche, raised on an oval foot. Mikhail & Semen Gratchev, marked with the Imperial Warrant as purveyor to the Russian Imperial Cout, St. Petersburg 1908–1917, 84 standard. Weight c. 1,037 g. H. 16.5 cm. L. 33 cm.

Provenance: The Collection of Vladimir M. Eitington (1899–1982), who was an important American collector of Russian decorative arts. A part of his collection is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
