The Imperial Glass Factory, 19th century

A Russian cut glass service, comprising 62 parts, richly cut with diamonds in triangles and borders, on straight and curved faceted stem, on star-shaped base. Variations in cuts, among others with stylized scrolling foliage. The Imperial Glass Factory, St. Petersburg, 19th century. (62).

Comprising: 9 champagne flutes, H. 17 cm., 6 red wine glasses, H. 14.5 cm., 10 green white wine glasses, H. 10.7 cm., 5 white wine glasses, H. 11 cm., 10 sweet wine glasses, H. 10 cm., 6 snaps glasses in various versions, H. 9 cm., 9 punch glasses, H. 7 cm., 1 larger and 1 smaller carafe, H. 19.5 cm. and 24 cm (no stopper), 3 smaller decanters (not-matching stoppers), H. 15.5–17 cm., 1 mustard jar, H. 11 cm., and 1 vinegar decanter, H. 13 cm.

In 1823, a very large glass service was ordered at The Imperial Glass Factory for the Imperial palaces surrounding St. Petersburg, among others the Catherine Palace and the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo and Peterhof. Therefore, the glass service was named “The Facetted Surrounding Service”. The present green glasses are identical with this service, while the other parts are with a variation of the same design.

Provenance: Acquired in Russia 1922–1929 by Alfred Schønebeck (1885–1931) and his wife Gerda Schønebeck, née Rydemann (1886–1980). She told their grandchild that these glasses were bought on an auction in Tsarskoie Selo with effects from the Alexander Palace, arranged by the Soviets. Thence their grandchild until today.
