Susanna in the bath. Unsigned. Oil on canvas 133×104 cm.
An apocryphal addition to the Old Testament describes how two lecherous elders threatened to accuse Susannah, a beautiful young woman, of adultery – a crime punishable by death – if she did not give in to their desires. One day, while she was bathing in the garden, as was her custom, they emerged from hiding and threatened to accuse her of adultery with a young man if she did not surrender to them. Despite the prospect of the death penalty, Susanna evaded. At the eleventh hour, she was saved from the humiliating accusation by the young Daniel, who, by cross-examining the two judges, exposed their slander.
