Porcelain bowl modelled in slightly wavy shape. Decorated with celadon glaze. The inside of the bowl with impressed inventory mark. Marked monogram. Unique. H. max. 10 cm. Diam. 26.9–27.4 cm.

Provenance: The private collection of Hans and Bente Weinberger. Acquired at Galleri Nørby, Copenhagen.

Edmund de Waal's unique, hand-turned porcelain pieces are conspicuous in their simplicity, usually decorated with celadon glazes in white or light blue-green. In his artistic production in recent years, he has worked with ceramic installations where objects are set up in various types of collection tableaux – often exhibited in contrasting historical settings. The still lifes are composed of groups of porcelain cylinders arranged in specially constructed display cases, on shelves and podiums created as part of the artwork. Edmund de Waal's work has on several occasions been represented at exhibitions here in Denmark. The first time was in 1996 at Galleri Nørby in Copenhagen and later in 2004 with the solo exhibition “Porcelain Room” at the Danish Museum of Art & Design and also a solo exhibition the same year at Galleri Nørby, where the bowl at this auction was acquired. In addition to being a trained ceramist, de Waal has studied English literature and Japanese language, and today he is not only an esteemed artist but also an internationally acclaimed and award-winning author. His ceramic works have been exhibited in a large number of museums around the world and are today part of the international contemporary art scene.
