George Chinnery 1774-1852

Double Portrait of Knud Wolff and Sarah Wolff, née Cruttenden. Black and red chalk. Inscribed George Chenery del. Calcutta 1818. Embossed collectors stamp BW, Lugt 420 Attached to mount with ruled borders. 360×270 mm.

An enigmatic double portrait of Sarah Wolff and Knud Wolff. The apparent gentle and highly detailed depiction of the faces is emphasized by the simple but virtuos sketched outline of the sitters attire. According to Wolff’s inscription on the mount the drawing was executed 1818, the same year Knud died. The artist depicts the couple with great affection indicating that this is more than a commissioned formal portrait. Chinnery is mentioned 1818 in a correspondence between Benjamin Wolff and his friend and brother-in-law J.C. Fick. C.W. Eckersberg had been commissioned by Fick to paint Madam Wolff, Knud and Benjamins mother. Emphasizing Eckersberg’s talent and speed Fick continues his praise; “Tell Chinery(sic), that Mother only had 3 two-hour sittings for this work”. The portrait of Madam Wolff was eventually shipped off to Calcutta. Sarah Wolff returned to Denmark and in 1821. The Danish painter C.W. Eckersberg was commissioned to paint her portrait; A portrait of Sarah Wolff née Cruttenden in a blue dress, writing a letter, sold in these rooms April 2009.
