913/1013

Lucius Aelius, Caesar, 136–138 AD, Aureus, Rome, 137 AD, Calicó 1449 (R2), RIC 2712 (Hadrian), C 42, 6.96 g. - rare

Obverse: L. AELIVS CAESAR. Bare head of Aelius, left.

Reverse: PIETAS (in field), TRIB. POT. COS. II.

Allegedly, the ailing Hadrian adopted Aelius as heir to the throne due to his good looks. Lucius had no military experience, but he had served as a senator, and was stationed as governor of Pannonia at the Danube border. Dying from a haemorrhage he predeceased the emperor by half a year.
